Steve Smith's Amazing Race: Race Ends
In baseball for 30 years, 1990 CMC set member Steve Smith finally won his World Series ring in 2008 as a coach with the Phillies.
Last night, after he and his daughter Allie were eliminated in the eighth episode of The Amazing Race, Steve noted that, on his list of life accomplishments, the World Series had been bumped down one.
"I've got a World Series ring," Steve said at the end of Sunday night's broadcast. "I have to tell you, people might think I'm crazy, but this jumps ahead of it."
Steve, of course, was referring to spending time with his daughter traveling the world.
"I want to cry," Allie said after being eliminated. "It's been so much fun. ... This whole thing was so special. I had the time of my life with you. It's something we will have forever."
Steve and Allie had been a strong team, finishing in the top half for several legs, even finishing first in the previous leg. But a series of bad decisions and bad luck threw them off their game.
In the Seychelles, they forgot their backpacks. Then they got lost on the way to a challenge, went to another, couldn't do it and then back to the first. It was lost time that they never made up.
It was almost fitting that Steve and Allie were eliminated Sunday night, baseball's opening night.
In interviews afterward, Steve noted he never expected they would do as well as they did, especially after he got lost in his hometown of Los Angeles on the first day. But, in the end, they ended up ahead of five teams, with another five still racing.
The race, he said, will have many memories for the two, including cracking up every time they see a paint brush, a reference to the first-leg mishap where they painted the wrong house.
"I'm blessed that my kids like me," Steve said. "It's a great feeling that they want to hang out with you and not their buddies all the time. We hang out and we've always had that great bond and we're going to continue to have that bond, but we have great stories."
