The pitch from Southern Oregon's Jeff Clifford in this August 1990 game seemingly got away from him. It also helped touch off a brawl.

The pitch knocked down rival Eugene catcher David Rolls. After taking his base, the brawl began as Rolls collided with the second baseman, according to The Eugene Register-Guard.

"I don't blame them for hitting me," Rolls told The Register-Guard of Clifford's pitch. "We've hit quite a few batters."

Clifford stayed in the game, finishing it out with two hitless innings. He didn't play much more, though. He got just 20 outings on the year, his only year as a pro.

Clifford's career began that year, taken by the Athletics in the 33rd round of the draft, out of Assumption College in Massachusetts.

At Assumption, Clifford played all four years. He went 16-13 overall and earned a degree in accounting, according to his ProCards card.

With the Athletics, Clifford was assigned to short-season Southern Oregon. In those 20 outings, he went 2-1, with a 3.93 ERA. He gave up a home run in a June game. It was his only season as a pro.

The Martinsville Bulletin introduced the 1989 Martinsville Phillies that June and there in the third row was Sixto Montero . Montero was an infielder, The Bulletin noted . He was signed as a free agent and was from the Dominican Republic. That season in 1989 marked his first as a pro. He went on to see time in two more campaigns. Or maybe three, depending on the sources.  In researching Montero, two names come up - Sixto Montero and Alberto Montero . It appears they are the same individual, as Sixto Montero is credited on one of his cards as Sixto Alberto Montero. Montero's career began that year in 1989, signed by the Phillies as a free agent out of his native Dominican Republic. Montero's time with the Phillies, however, proved brief . He saw just two games at rookie Martinsville. He went 0 for 3. Montero signed on with the Astros for 1990. He played that season in the rookie Gulf Coast League. John Cangelosi took his small size to 13 majors seasons

After going hitless in the five games of his 1985 call up, the White Sox' John Cangelosi waited until his second game of 1986 to get his first hit .  It ended up being a home run . "I was really pressing for that first hit; I didn't think it would ever come," Cangelosi told his hometown Miami Herald after the April 1986 homer. "Now, I think I'll be more relaxed at the plate. My second  hit won't take nearly as long to get." Cangelosi did continue getting hits. He ultimately got enough to return to the majors over 13 seasons with seven organizations. In 1997, he helped his hometown Marlins win the World Series. Jerry Reuss played over 22 ML seasons, threw no-hitter

Young Jerry Reuss had only seen one big league outing by April 1970, the previous spring with St. Louis.  But St. Louis manager Red Schoendienst had seen enough to see big things in Reuss' future, according to The Tulsa World . "If Reuss doesn't hurt his arm, by the time he gets his control down he's going to be a great pitcher," Schoendienst told The World . "There aren't many guys around now who can hit his fastball." Reuss turned out to be great enough to stick around in the majors over more than two decades . He hit double digits in wins 12 times, made to All-Star teams and he even tossed a no-hitter. Reuss' career began in 1967, taken by the Cardinals in the second round of the draft out of Ritenour High in St. Louis . Reuss briefly made AAA Tulsa in 1967, then Tulsa again in 1969. Asheville Tourists reliever Mario Prats pitched the ninth, the score tied, in this August 1991 game, but he couldn't hold it, The Asheville Citizen-Times wrote. Prats gave up a solo home run with two outs to take the 2-1 loss, The Citizen-Times wrote. "We've got to sit there and have the guys out of the bullpen pick us up," Asheville manager Frank Cacciatore told The Citizen-Times . "And we can't hold guys down. It's as simple as that." Prats pitched that game in his third season as a pro. That campaign also marked his last . he topped out single-A. Prats' career began in 1989, taken by the Astros in the 85th round of the draft out of Coral Park High School in Florida. Asheville Tourists starter Duane Brown went seven innings in this May 1991 game, giving up two hits and no runs for the win, The Asheville Citizen-Times wrote . The outing drew high praise from Asheville manager Frank Cacciatore afterward. "That was a very, very clutch pitching performance by Duane Brown," Cacciatore told The Citizen-Times , noting the staff had suffered a letdown in recent games. "So it was very important that Brown came in and did the job tonight." Brown eventually worked to do the job over a career that spanned more than a decade .
