Reed picked up two hits in the 6-2 win over rival Mount Miguel, The Los Angeles Times wrote.
Reed played well enough at Santana to be taken in the next year's draft, as a pitcher. Reed, however, only pitched well enough in the pros to get four seasons. He never made AA.
Reed's career started in 1987, taken by the Padres in the 16th round of the draft out of Santana High School in Santee, Ca. Reed is also counted as having gone to Grossmont College.
Reed took the field for the Padres in 1988, playing mostly in the rookie Arizona League. in 17 outings, eight starts, he went 1-7, with a 8.39 ERA. He also got one outing at short-season Spokane.
For 1989, Reed moved to single-A Waterloo. In 31 outings, 23 starts, he went 6-15, with a 4.43 ERA. In July, Reed the pitcher took part in a 25-inning marathon, getting an at bat as a pinch hitter. He didn't get a hit.
Reed returned to Waterloo for 1990, getting four outings at high-A Riverside. Between the two, he went 6-10, with a 3.73 ERA.
For 1991, Reed played at high-A High Desert, getting 21 relief appearances. He also got 10 outings at independent Miami. He had a 6.12 ERA on the year. It was his final season as a pro.
