Mike Mathiot wasn't especially fast. But he did swipe eight bases for single-A Kenosha in 1989.

It a game that August, though, it was Mathiot called upon to pinch-hit and possibly score the winning run, according to The Madison Capital Times.

That's what Mathiot did. Starting from second, Mathiot came in on a single to score the walk-off game winner, The Capital Times wrote.

Mathiot scored that game winner in his third season as a pro. He got into just one more pro season.

Mathiot's career began in 1987, taken by the Twins in the fourth round of the draft out of Springfield High School in Illinois.

At Springfield, Mathiot knocked in two runs on a hit in the June 1985 state finals. He also scored a run.

Helping Mathiot get the notice of scouts was Springfield native John Schaive, according to an Illinois General Assembly resolution.

With the Twins, Mathiot started in 1987 with rookie Elizabethton. In 26 games, he hit .188. He returned to Elizabethton for 1988, improving his average to .278 over 41 games. He also stole 10 bases.

For 1989, Mathiot moved to single-A Kenosha. He hit just .143 in 45 games, swiping eight bases. He returned to Kenosha for 1990. In another 48 games that year, his average ended at .184. He didn't return for another campaign.

Asheville Tourists pitching coach Mark Brewer explained to The Asheville Citizen-Times in 2016 the impact injuries and call-ups have on a staff. Every team dealt with them, Brewer told The Citizen-Times that July. Passed over in the 1978 draft out of the University of Florida, Nick Belmonte tried to make his mark with independent teams of the Northwest League, The Salem Statesman Journal wrote . He played well enough for brief looks with the Brewers and Expos, but then found himself back with the independent Salem Senators for 1979, The Statesman Journal wrote . "I don't want to say anything against the Senators - they've been great to me," Belmonte told The Statesman Journal . "It's just that this isn't what I planned for myself." A one-time second round pick, Jeff Gay soon found himself in a backup role at single-A Quad City. By early 1988, his third season, he'd had enough and went home, The Moline Dispatch wrote later.  But, after speaking with others, Gay got to go back. He also soon got a new start in the organization, at single-A co-op Reno, The Dispatch wrote . "I have to tell you, I had the best time I've ever had out there," Gay told The Dispatch at the start of 1990. "I had a good time and it was a learning experience. I'm kind of glad I went there." At age 23, when he started in pro ball, Darius Gash knew he'd gotten a late start, he told The Waterloo Courier in his second season. But he also knew he could still play, he told The Courier in August 1991 at age 24. "I think you're only as old as you make yourself and I think I have a lot left," Gash told The Courier . Jac Gelb had a good first pro season at rookie Wytheville in 1989. He went 9-4, with a 3.42 ERA over 15 starts. To start 1990, Gelb told The Orlando Sentinel he hoped to replicate that success. "I don't really think I could have had a better season," Gelb told The Sentinel . "I'd like to have that kind of success again." Gelb played that upcoming season between single-A Peoria and short-season Geneva. However, he couldn't replicate that early success. That second pro season turned out to be his last pro season. One of Chris George 's 1992 baseball cards talked up his potential in the major leagues. He'd seen two outings with the Brewers in Milwaukee the previous year and he looked to return in 1992. "Tough and competitive, Chris just might be a solid addition to the Brewers bullpen in 1992,' the card read . By the time that card came out, though, George's major league career was over. He played that year at AAA and returned for one more after that, but those two appearances in 1991 proved the extent of his big league career. George's career began in 1988, taken by the Brewers in the seventh round of the draft out of Kent State University . Prior to joining the Brewers, George played 1987 in the Alaska Baseball League .
