The Wausau Daily Herald noted Mattie Asencio's arrival at single-A Wausau in late-May 1990 and also noted where he came from.
Asencio was a native of the Dominican Republic, The Daily Herald noted, and he and another new addition made seven Wausau team members from the country.
Asencio's stay proved brief. By the end of June, he was at rookie Bluefield.
But his stay at Wausau, however, appears to have been long enough to get him on a Wausau card, just not one of his own.
Wausau teammate Brad Hildrith's card included a photo of someone other than Hildrith and, though not 100 percent, a comparison of card photos suggests the player in the Hildrith photo is Asencio.Asencio's career began in 1990, signed by the Orioles as an amateur free agent out of his native Dominican Republic. Asencio was also credited by his given name Matires Asencio, as well as Matires Ascencio.
Asencio started with the Orioles at Wausau and he committed a run-producing error in one of his first games. He then tagged out a runner in an early-June game. He then knocked in a run on a single in another June contest.
By late-June, Asencio found himself in Bluefield. There, he got his own card, presumably with the correct photo.
Asencio saw 12 games at Bluefield after 19 at Wausau. He hit just .075 - 4 for 53.
He then played 1991 in the rookie Gulf Coast League. He picked up two hits in an August game. He hit .213 in 54 games to end his career.
