Darren Hursey pitched into tired arm, worked on rhythm; Saw six pro seasons, made AA

Darren Hursey pitched a lot over his first four seasons, enough to tire out his arm and impact his performance, The Tampa Tribune wrote in 1990.

After getting some rest, his fastball picked up speed and he hoped he'd be on course, he told The Tribune.

"I just have to get my rhythm back," he told The Tribune that August. "As long as I'm healthy I feel like I can do almost anything, and I feel really good right now."

Hursey spoke to The Tribune in the midst of his fifth professional season. He ended up seeing time in two more. He topped out at AA.

Hursey's career began in 1986, taken by the Tigers in the 17th round of the draft out of Urbana High School in Illinois. Hursey was also credited as Darrin Hursey.

Hursey started with the Tigers at rookie Bristol. He went 5-3, with a 2.70 ERA over 13 outings, 11 starts. He moved to single-A Fayetteville for 1987, where he went 11-8 over 23 starts, with a 3.11 ERA.

In 1988, at single-A Lakeland, he went 15-8, with a 2.39 mark. At one point in 1988, Hursey threw more than 22 straight scoreless innings. He spoke to The Tribune that August about working to build up his endurance.

"On my off days, I run in the mornings and try to maintain a healthy diet - especially in the heat," he told The Tribune. "Excitement for me is once every five days when I pitch. I usually get up and get active a little earlier."

Hursey made AA London for 1989. He went 8-13 there, with a 3.97 ERA over 26 starts. He then returned to high-A Lakeland for 1990, then turned reliever at London in 1991, his last time with the Tigers.

He's not recorded as playing in 1992 or 1993, but he played one last season in pro ball at independent Saskatoon in 1994. He went 2-0 over 14 outings, one start, with a 2.82 ERA to end his career.
