Jimmy Barragan's Oklahoma State Cowboys fell in the 1987 College World Series title game.

But Barragan had something else to look forward to: The possibility of the pros, his hometown Imperial Beach Star-News wrote.

"It's really hard, but you have to move on," Barragan told The Star-News of the series loss. "I'm meeting with the Phillies to possibly sign a pro contract. I'm trying to think about that to clear my mind."

Barragan did sign with the Phillies year. He went on to play in four pro seasons. He topped out at high-A.

Barragan's career began that year, taken by the Phillies in the 19th round of the draft out of Oklahoma State. He was also credited by his given name, Jaime Barragan.

In April 1986, Barragan spoke to The Daily Oklahoman about lifting weights, using a different bat and adding power.

"But it's mostly the weights, and getting ready mentally, knowing I have to hit the ball for this team to be successful," Barragan told The Daily Oklahoman. "We've got a lot of rookies and I've got to be a leader."

With the Phillies, Barragan started at short-season Utica. He saw 67 games and hit .318, with five home runs.

He moved to single-A Spartanburg for 1988. He hit .261 there over 125 games. He then made single-A Clearwater in 1989 and hit .281 in a full season there.

For 1990, he returned to Clearwater, at high-A, but his season proved brief. He saw 13 games and hit .209 to end his career.

Barragan has since gone on to be a teacher and coach. In 2021, he's listed as a Spanish teacher and assistant baseball coach at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic High School in Missouri.
