From Reynaldo Martinez' first professional season to his second, his ERA jumped.

It jumped from a solid 1.82 in 1989 to a season-long 6.91 in 1990. His second ERA proved to be his last.

Martinez ended up playing just two pro seasons. He never made it higher than single-A.

Martinez' career began in 1989, signed by the Athletics as an undrafted free agent out of New York City. Martinez has also been credited by the name Ray Martinez.

Martinez played his first season in the rookie Arizona League. There, he had that 1.82 mark over 27 relief outings. He struck out 38 over 49.1 innings.

For 1990, he moved to single-A Madison. He got into just six games in relief there, giving up four earned in 7.2 innings.

Martinez then continued his 1990 season with the Mets at rookie Kingsport. He got into 20 games there, starting one. He ended with a 7.41 ERA and 26 strikeouts. It was his final season as a pro.

Passed over in the 1978 draft out of the University of Florida, Nick Belmonte tried to make his mark with independent teams of the Northwest League, The Salem Statesman Journal wrote . He played well enough for brief looks with the Brewers and Expos, but then found himself back with the independent Salem Senators for 1979, The Statesman Journal wrote . Asheville Tourists starter Duane Brown went seven innings in this May 1991 game, giving up two hits and no runs for the win, The Asheville Citizen-Times wrote . The outing drew high praise from Asheville manager Frank Cacciatore afterward. "That was a very, very clutch pitching performance by Duane Brown," Cacciatore told The Citizen-Times , noting the staff had suffered a letdown in recent games. Wallace Minnifield didn't really expect to turn pro. But, as he played summer ball in his native Georgia in 1987, the opportunity presented itself, The Kingsport Times-News wrote in 1989. "I didn't really decide to play pro ball until the summer I signed," Minnifield told The Times-News as he played at rookie Kingsport. "But, it was something I had always wanted to do. I got the chance to put my name on the dotted line. It's a lot of hard work but it's good. I love it so far." Minnifield spoke to The Times-News in his second season on the field in pro ball.
