Greenville Braves hurler Marcos Vasquez had just closed out two games in July 1993. Earlier, he'd been used in middle relief and even started, The Greenville News wrote.
For Vasquez, he was just concerned with pitching, he told The News.
"I just go out and do whatever my job is," Vasquez told The News then. "Whether it's starter or reliver, I'm learning from that. You just get out there and get it done quick. I don't mind being the closer. I like it."
Vasquez ended up going out and doing the job professionally over 11 seasons. He briefly made AAA and even saw Taiwan. Vasquez, however, never got to do his job in the bigs.
Vasquez' career began in 1987, signed by the Braves as a free agent out of his native Puerto Rico.
Vasquez started with the Braves in the rookie Gulf Coast League. He went 3-5 over 12 starts, with a 3.71 ERA.
He moved to single-A Sumter for 1988, then returned for much of 1989. He went 10-10 in 1989, with a 3.27 ERA in 25 starts at Sumter.
For 1990, he split time between single-A Burlington and high-A Durham. He then played 1991 between Durham and single-A Macon.
With Macon in April 1991, Vasquez overcame a slow start in a game to get the win, according to The Macon Telegraph.
"I struggled finding my strike zone at first," Vasquez told The Telegraph. "But about the third inning everything settled down. The big thing was the guys were really behind me."
Vasquez played 1992 between Durham and AA Greenville. He went 4-5, with a 4.61 ERA at Greenville over 43 outings, four starts.
He played 1993 back at Greenville, then moved to the Reds system and AA Chattanooga for 1994. He returned to Chattanooga for 1995, but also got a two-game look at AAA Indianapolis. He got into four innings at Indianapolis and didn't give up a run, his only outings at AAA.
Vasquez then moved to Taiwan. He saw 16 outings for Uni-President in 1996, then 46 there in 1997 to end his career.
