Peninsula Pilots middle reliever Darin Loe got out of a jam on a strike out this night in July 1990, then pitched three more innings to finish the game for the win, The Newport News Daily Press wrote.
"I wasn't really nervous when I came in, but I was a little unsure," Loe told The Daily Press of the jam. "It had been a while since I had thrown. I had done some work on the side, but not in a game situation, from the mound."
Loe picked up that win in his second season as a pro. He went on to see time in just one more campaign. He topped out at high-A.
Loe's career began in 1989, taken by the Mariners in the 26th round of the draft out of Valley City State University in North Dakota.
At Valley City State, Loe also played football, serving as the school's star quarterback, holding 10 school records by his senior year, according to The Bismarck Tribune.
"He's an outstanding running quarterback," his coach Jim Dew told The Tribune. "We haven't run him as much as we've wanted to because he does so many things for us."
With the Mariners, Loe started at short-season Bellingham. He went 3-3 over 21 relief outings, with a 5.98 ERA.
He moved to high-A Peninsula for 1990. He went 4-5 there with 3.25 ERA and five saves. He then saw high-A San Bernardino in 1991 over nine relief appearances. He went 0-1, with a 7.30 ERA to end his career.
Loe has gone on to be a coach in college. He became head coach at Northwest Missouri State University in 2000, a job he continues to hold in 2023.
In March 2022, Loe earned his 700th career win, joining 23 other active Division II coaches nationwide with that number, The Northwest Missourian wrote.
"It was a big day, obviously. It’s a good number to achieve — get that one out of the way — kind of brings you back to all the players that got you to that point," Loe told The Missourian then. "Had some great teams over the years and a special group of guys to enjoy it with."
