Mark Cerny's Billings Mustangs fell this day in July 1989 game, but Cerny's effort drew praise, according to The Billings Gazette.
Cerny knocked in one of the team's two runs on what The Gazette described as a "soft single into left field."
"Cerny had a great at-bat on his single," Billings manager Dave Keller told The Gazette afterward. "He put the ball in play with two strikes on him. He fouled a couple pitches off and stayed in there doing what we needed."
Cerny had that at bat in his first season as a pro. He saw time in just one more. He topped out at short-season.
Cerny's career began that year in 1990, taken by the Reds in the 26th round of the draft out of the University of Houston.
With Billings, Cerny stole second and scored in a June game. Early that July, he picked up four hits and scored five times in a win. In early August, he hit two triples in one game.
Cerny saw 49 games overall for rookie Billings and hit .298. He also stole 12 bases.
For 1990, he moved to independent short-season Erie. He saw just two games. He went 1 for 5. Those games proved his last as a pro.
