After three unsuccessful years at Eastern Michigan University, Tom Michno found himself at Columbus College in Georgia for 1986 and intending to play better, he told The Columbus Ledger.

"I've got one more year to prove myself," Michno told The Ledger, "and I plan to have a heck of a season."

Michno had a good enough season that year to catch the eye of the Orioles and turn pro. His pro career lasted six seasons. He topped out at AA.

Michno's career began that year, taken by the Orioles in the sixth round of the draft out of Columbus College.

Michno started with the Orioles at rookie Bluefield. He saw 14 outings, one start, picking up two wins, four saves and a 2.81 ERA.

He moved to short-season Newark and single-A Hagerstown for 1987, then to the Cubs and high-A Winston-Salem for 1988. He saw 45 outings, two starts at Winston-Salem. He went 4-12, with a 2.95 ERA and 14 saves.

Michno went six innings, giving up two earned in one of his two starts, a July 1988 win at Winston-Salem, The Winston-Salem Journal wrote.

"Yeah, I felt Tom would give us five or six innings; he's got good stuff," Winston-Salem Manager Jay Loviglio told The Journal afterward of Michno. "He mixed in his change with his fastball and slider, and kept them off balance."

He then played 1989 largely at AA Charlotte. He saw 37 outings there, with 10 starts. He went 5-7 and had a 3.36 ERA.

Michno moved to independent short-season Miami for 1990. He saw 31 outings, 10 starts there, with a 2.83 ERA. He then returned to Miami for 1991. He turned starter and went 11-15 over 29 starts, with a 2.42 ERA. That year proved his last as a pro.
