Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs hitting coach Darryl Robinson saw his job as extending from practice all the way to the batters box, he told The Allentown Morning Call in May 2019.
Every at bat his hitters too, he took it with them, he told The Morning Call.
"I'm in that box with them," Robinson told The Morning Call. "My mind is spinning like crazy when they are in there. I'm trying to will (them) to do what I want."
Robinson entered a long coaching career after a playing career himself. He saw 12 seasons in all as a player, five in independent ball. He topped out at AA.
Robinson's career in baseball began in 1986, taken by the Royals in the second round of the draft out of Whitney M. Young High School in Chicago.
Robinson started with the Royals in the rookie Gulf Coast League. He made short-season Eugene in 1987, then single-A Appleton for 1988. He hit .249 in 108 games there.
For 1990, he saw high-A Baseball City and he made AA Memphis in 1991. He hit .285 in 99 games at Memphis in 1991.
Robinson, however, had hoped his 1991 would go better with at least a look at AAA Omaha, The Memphis Commercial Appeal wrote.
"It's been a tough year, but I think you just have to stay loose and when it's your time to play you have to give it your all," Robinson told The Commercial Appeal after going 4 for 4 in a game, with a game-winning triple.
Robinson played one more season at Memphis then moved to independent ball. He played 1993 at independent Sioux City and 1995 at Aberdeen.
He then played at Minot, Allentown, Atlantic City and Nashua to end his career.
Robinson started his coaching career by 2009 at high-A Lancaster with the Astros. He stayed there for seven seasons, then moved up to AAA Fresno for 2017. He moved to the Phillies and AAA Lehigh Valley for 2019 and is most recently credited as coaching there in 2021.
