Second-year rookie league pitcher Cecilio Gonzalez impressed in this mid-1991 stretch, The Johnson City Press wrote.
In 18.2 innings pitched, he'd given up three earned and walked just one, an intentional walk, The Press wrote.
"Gonzalez looks like he's ready to take over and get out of this league and move up to full season A," Johnson City coach Joe Cunningham told The Press early that July.
For Gonzalez, though, he never did get to move up. That season, his second as a pro, proved his last. He topped out in rookie ball.
Gonzalez' career began in 1990, signed by the Cardinals out of his native Dominican Republic.
Gonzalez started with the Cardinals at rookie Johnson City. He saw 13 starts overall and went 2-7, with a 4.18 ERA.
He returned to Johnson City for 1991. He picked up a win in a late June game, going seven innings while giving up two runs. Gonzalez saw 12 starts in all and went 6-3, with a 4.41 ERA to end his career.
