North Carolina Wesleyan College's Doug Flowers impressed in this April 1988 game, hitting two three-run home runs in the win, The Rocky Mount Telegram wrote.

Actually, Flowers had impressed all year, his coach Mike Fox told The Telegram.

"I'm running out of words to describe Doug Flowers," Fox told The Telegram afterward. "He has had an amazing year for us."

Flowers continued to impress, enough so to get a shot at the pros. His pro career lasted three seasons. He topped out at high-A.

Flowers' pro career began in 1990, taken by the Orioles in the 44th round of the draft out of North Carolina Wesleyan. He played his high school ball at North Carolina's Fike High School.

He spoke to The Telegram after his selection, indicating he was a little disappointed at how late he went.

"(The contract) wasn't a lot, but I guess for the round I went it was OK," Flowers told The Telegram. "The signing bonus wasn't that great ...  But it's been a lifetime dream."

Flowers started with the Orioles at rookie Bluefield. He got into 39 games and hit .239.

That July, he spoke with The Telegram again about life in the minors, including as he wasn't playing every day.

"It's tough, it really is," Flowers told The Telegram. "You're not seeing that type of pitching everyday. I can tell when I do get in and haven't seen those live arms."

Flowers played 1991 between single-A Kane County and high-A Frederick. He hit .288 on the year in 81 total games.

Flowers then returned to Frederick briefly in 1992. He saw just seven games, ending his career.

His career over, Flowers returned home to North Carolina and played slow-pitch softball, helping win national championships. He also made his high school's hall of fame in 2008.
