Salt Lake City's Dan Montes would have had the game-winner this night in August 1990, but for a ground rule, The Salt Lake Tribune wrote.
Montes hit one into a fan section, meaning a ground rule double and the runner ahead of him stopping at third, The Tribune wrote.
"I was looking triple all the way," Montes told The Tribune afterward. "I think I would have made it easily. But it was the same rules for both teams."
Montes made it that year into his second pro season. It also proved his last. He topped out at short-season.
Montes' career began the year before, signed by the Giants as an undrafted free agent out of California. Montes was also credited as Daniel Montes and Danny Montes.
Montes started with the Giants at short-season Everett. He saw 20 games there and hit .177. He singled and appeared to score in a June game, according to The Everett Daily Herald, but was called out.
Montes then moved to rookie Pocatello. He saw 25 games there and hit .299.
For 1990, Montes signed with independent Salt Lake City. He hit a two-run double in a July game. In an August game, Montes was credited with a spectacular diving stop at second, The Tribune wrote.
"Montes made a great play to save that winning run," Salt Lake City pitcher Randy White told The Tribune afterward.
Overall, Montes saw 31 games for Salt Lake City and hit .235. That season marked his last as a pro.
