The rookie Danville Braves had a 1-2 start to the 2003 season, but Danville manager Kevin McMullen wasn't concerned, he told The Danville Register and Bee that June.
"Our league is a development level and that's how our entire organization looks at things," McMullen told The Register and Bee. "At this level it's more about evaluating than it is about winning and losing."
McMullen has spent most of his career evaluating, though mostly in college. After playing three seasons in the minors himself, McMullen has gone on to coach in college and briefly in the pros.
McMullen's career in baseball began in 1990, signed by the independent Salt Lake City Trappers out of Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
With Salt Lake City, McMullen saw 60 games and hit .303, with 10 home runs.
He moved to the Yankees system for 1991 and played between single-A Greensboro and high-A Fort Lauderdale. He saw 55 games in all and hit .256.
McMullen then returned to Salt Lake City for 1992. He hit a two-run home run in an August game, then a three-run shot in another contest that month.
Overall, McMullen saw 67 games with Salt Lake City that year and hit .328, with 11 home runs to end his career.
McMullen then turned college coach. he served as an assistant coach at St. John's, Indiana University of Pennsylvania and at East Carolina. After his stint with the Braves, McMullen signed on as an associate head coach at the University of Virginia, a job he continues going into 2025.
"McMullan also serves as Virginia’s recruiting coordinator and hitting coach and works defensively with the Cavaliers’ infielders and catchers," his Virginia bio reads. "He is known as one of the top recruiters and developers of players in the country."
