Eastern Kentucky hurler Randy White started the 1988 season 1-2, but his coach thought he could do better, The Associated Press wrote in May 1989.
"He said said I wasn't pitching up to my potential," White recalled to The AP. "That really got me thinking. He challenged me."
White took that challenge and turned around his season. Eventually, he took it to the pros. White saw time in two pro campaigns, both in rookie ball.
White's career began in 1989, signed by the Braves as an undrafted free agent out of Eastern Kentucky.
At Eastern Kentucky, White went 27-11 overall, with a 2.74 ERA. He also earned conference Player of the Year honors his senior season and NCAA Division 1 All-South Region. In 2018, he was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame.
With the Braves, White played 1989 at rookie Idaho Falls. He saw 13 games, 11 starts and went 5-3, with a 4.40 ERA.
He then signed for 1990 with rookie independent Salt Lake City. That August, he came on in relief in a game where temperatures dropped below 60, though White focused elsewhere, The Salt Lake Tribune wrote. White went three innings for the save.
"It was real muggy," White told The Tribune. "In the last inning I could see my breath, but it wasn't nippy cold. ... When I first went in, my fastball had too much movement. I felt like I was throwing in a fog."
White saw 18 outings total for Salt Lake City in 1990, one start. He went 1-1, with six saves and ended with a 5.45 ERA. That season proved his last as a pro.
